What Is Included in a Private Sydney Harbour Charter?

Most people ask the same question before booking a private Sydney Harbour charter: what exactly do I get for the money? It is a fair question, because charter pricing can look deceptively simple — an hourly rate — and it is not always obvious what that rate actually covers.

This guide covers everything included in a private charter with Sydney Harbour Boat Tours, what you can bring yourself, where you go, and how the pricing works so you can plan confidently before you book.

What is included as standard

Every private charter with Sydney Harbour Boat Tours includes the following as standard.

The vessel, exclusively yours. Your group has the entire boat for the duration of the charter. There are no other passengers. You are not sharing the vessel with strangers or combined with other bookings. This applies to every charter we offer, including the whale watching safari.

Your captain and guide. Every charter includes a qualified, experienced skipper who is also a knowledgeable Sydney Harbour local. They provide personal commentary throughout — on the history, the geography, the wildlife and the architecture. This is not a recorded audio guide. It is a live, conversational account of the harbour tailored to your group and what you want to know.

A tailored itinerary. We design the route around your group, your interests and your duration. A typical private harbour charter covers Sydney Harbour icons from the water, waterfront suburbs with some of Australia’s most significant architecture, national park foreshore, secluded bays and beaches, and wildlife habitats where you may encounter fur seals, little penguins and various seabirds. The further into the harbour we travel, the more of this you see — our fast Axopar sports cruisers cover more ground in the same time than most harbour vessels.

Swim towels. Swim towels are provided on all private charters.

Fuel, marina fees and all operational costs. The charter rate covers everything needed to run the boat. There are no add-on fees for fuel or berthing.

What you can bring

Private charters are BYO. You are welcome to bring your own food and drinks for the duration of the charter. There is no corkage fee and no catering minimum.

If you would like a BBQ on board, this can be arranged on request — contact us before booking to confirm availability.

For groups celebrating a birthday, anniversary, proposal or other occasion, you are welcome to bring decorations and set up the boat as you like before departure.

How the pricing works

Private charters are priced at a flat rate of AUD $800 per hour. The boat holds a maximum of 11 guests.

A two-hour charter costs $1,600. Shared across ten guests, that is $160 per person — less than many restaurant meals and considerably less than most people expect for a fully private Sydney Harbour experience.

For the Sydney Icons, Bays and Beaches cruise, which runs for approximately two hours and visits national park foreshore, secluded beaches and wildlife habitats, ten guests pay approximately $168 per person at maximum capacity.

For the Whales of Sydney Sea Safari, the pricing is structured differently. The entire safari is priced at AUD $1,980 for the boat, accommodating up to eight guests. That works out to $247.50 per person at maximum capacity, and the Whales Guarantee applies: if no whales are spotted, guests receive a complimentary 2.5-hour return tour in the same whale season, subject to availability.

Where you go

The itinerary on a private Sydney Harbour charter is shaped by your group, your duration and what you want to see. On a typical charter we cover:

  • The harbour’s most iconic landmarks from the water — the Opera House, the Harbour Bridge, and the city foreshore
  • Waterfront suburbs including Point Piper and Vaucluse, home to some of Australia’s most significant private residences
  • National park foreshore along the Middle and North Harbour
  • Secluded bays and beaches accessible only by boat, suitable for swimming
  • Wildlife habitats where Australian fur seals are commonly spotted off South Head, alongside little penguins and seabirds
  • Historic locations including the site of Australia’s first European landing

Our Axopar sports cruisers are fast enough to travel significantly further into the harbour than larger or slower vessels, which means you see more in the same amount of time.

What makes a private charter different from a shared tour

The primary difference is the boat. On a private charter, no one else is on board. The captain adjusts the commentary, the pace and the stops to suit your group rather than an average of thirty strangers.

Sydney Harbour Boat Tours does not operate large passenger ferries or multi-deck vessels. Our fleet consists of Axopar sports cruisers — fast, open-top, purpose-built for small groups on open water. Maximum capacity is 11 guests on private charters.

The shared exception is Sydney Secrets, our small-group lunch cruise, which runs with a maximum of eight guests and includes lunch at the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia on Rushcutters Bay.
